"Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,"
Elbert Hubbard, an American writer, wrote, "A retentive memory may be a good thing, but the ability to forget is the true token of greatness. Successful people forget. They know the past is irrevocable. They’re running a race. They can’t afford to look behind...". This reveals that people who occupy themselves with the memories of yesterday are unlikely to apply themselves towards the pursuit of new goals today. Such disposition makes them to relish the dividends of their past achievements while hanging up on the pursuit of new ambitions. However, those who understand that success is the progressive realization of a predetermined worthwhile goal make a practice of GIVING THOUGHT TO WHAT LIES AHEAD. Put differently, they forget what is behind in order to get ahead in the pursuit of their goal. Therefore, it is understandable that forward thinking people make a practice of thinking through opportunities that lies ahead of them. They are optimistic because they cram their thoughts with new hopes, aspirations and expectations. Being occupied with the thought of what lies ahead of him, Apostle Paul laid aside every accomplishment of the past and focused his thought on new pursuits. To sum it up, you can help yourself to make headway if you stuff your head with new hopes and thoughts of greater accomplishment.
Aside from giving thought to what lies ahead of them, people who forget their past often GIVE CHASE TO NEW GOALS. If you want to maximise your potential, you need to keep at what you know how to do best. Never assume that you have arrived because there are always new territories to conquer, new grounds to gain and uncharted waters to experience. Hence, in order to get ahead in the actualisation of your dream, keep dreaming and living out your dreams. Don't make a stop because of yesterday's dream that came through. Be willing to dream again and again until you have made the most of your potential.
It is important to note that one of the reasons why some people are stuck in their past is because they fail to GET OVER THE GLORY OF THE PAST. Conversely, some get stuck in the past because their dreams didn't come through due to their brush with unpleasant experiences. Hence, they decline to GET OFF DISCOURAGEMENT. While it is heart warming to experience the taste of glory, such experience shouldn't discourage the drive to press forward to greater height. Those who allow their past accolades to get to their heads end up taking a beat seat while others surpass their records. On the flip side, people who allow discouragement to slow them down or keep them on the sidelines don't get into the limelight. Are you preoccupied with yesterday and its glories? You would do yourself a heap of good if you would forget what lies behind in order to give chase to new challenges and opportunities that are ahead of you. Today, make the most of new opportunities that attend your way, as you choose to think and look forward towards a better tomorrow.
