LEADERSHIP IS MORE RELATIONAL THAN POSITIONAL

Leadership cannot be divorced from relationship. Leaders who leave their footprints on the sands of time put a high premium on bonding and building relationship. When leaders help their team to get a foothold in exhibiting their potential, they come across as engineers who build talents and develop capacities. On the flip side, positional leaders glory in touting their own profile without creating enabling atmosphere for raising high flyers. A positional leader takes much pride in his title while a relational leaders embrace the right attitude to help others to attain what they have the capacity of becoming. A positional leader is often gratified with throwing his weight around to fish for attention and respect but a relational leader makes a pitch for his team, for them to earn their spurs and shine. It's a norm for positional leaders to get on power trip. They pull rank to make their seemingly high status to resonate with others. The common thread for positional leaders is to keep people at arm's length. They put much stock in distinguishing themselves from their team, to create a sense of I-am-not-in-your- class atmosphere. However, leaders who are high in building relationship resist the urge of holing up in their space. They are approachable, making their team to easily warm up to them for help, counsel and support. It is important to note that if people are following you because they have to and not because they want to, it's more often because you are being positional. Consider a paradigm shift from being positional to becoming relational, which endorses your leadership with credibility and influence.
