Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. - Colossians 2:8
Keeping with traditions that foster unity, progress, discipline and trust lead up to the road to great accomplishment. This highlights the fact that traditions provide the common creed that engender a desired result. Hence, traditions aren't counterproductive inasmuch as they pave the way of perpetuity of a common good. Many businesses are successful today because of the traditions that define and dictate their value system and operations. However, certain mechanics, procedures and approach adopted as traditions may become antiquated. As such, they are likely to fail the efficiency test. Why perpetuate a tradition that is not only old-fashioned but also deficient of speed, accuracy and efficiency! Consumed with the preference for tradition, an employee could sacrifice a promising ideas that offer the dividend of efficiency on the altar of tradition. If the norm that you are accustomed to does not stimulate efficiency, you should be broadminded enough to admit a better and more efficient approach.
One of the reasons why some folks keep bringing up the rear is because of their reluctance to change. They see change has a difficulty while sticking to the antiquity of tradition. Whilst they could have leveraged technology, they remain stuck to the antiquated fashion of doing things. It goes without saying that, technology, for instance, provides one of the wheels that make change profitable and progress workable. Without mincing words, you would be at the risk of getting stuck in a rut, if tradition is getting in the way of embracing value adding work approach. To steer the wheel of change, you need to question the status quo and spotlight the dividends of embracing change in an evolving world.
Obsession with tradition could also hurt the triumph of insight. The Pharisee of Jesus' days were stickler for traditions. Their tradition was predicated on their interpretation of the Law of the Lord. The disposition of the Pharisee highlights their misconception of the Law. They had no insight, no revelation of the Law of the Lord. Their interpretation of the Law is fraught with distortions and dilution of the divine inspiration infused in the Law. Whilst the Pharisees paid attention to details in observing their traditions, they lost sight of God's revelation and mandate for mankind. A case in point is the Pharisees' detest for healing on the Sabbath day, which highlights the Pharisees' veiled understanding of the scripture and their obsession with tradition. They downplayed the import of human welfare whilst attaching much weight to the observance of their tradition. Whilst it is laudable to be a stickler for rules, such rules shouldn't get in the way of leveraging the insight that would dial up the dividend of change. Today, identity the traditions that are depleting the drive to expansion and productivity. Don't hold your breathe while tradition is playing havoc with efficiency, productivity and profitability. Take a bold step and float that enterprising idea today.
